Wide World of Maps' MapMachine
Broadens its Borders

PHOENIX - A little over a year ago, MapMachine made its debut in the Phoenix area at the Wide World of Maps, to the delight of hunters, anglers, campers and other travelers. Wide World of Maps added the National Geographic Society's "topo maps on demand" system. At that time, the area covered the entire state of Arizona. The MapMachine's capabilities have now been expanded to include five more states with complete topo map coverage for California, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming. No longer will customers have to wait days or weeks for special orders of these out-of-state topo maps! You can now select the map you want and get it while-you-wait in just a few minutes.

To those of you who have not yet used the MapMachine, these amazing easy-to-use computer station kiosks are at both Wide World of Maps' Phoenix and Mesa locations. The concept of this system allows customers to select and print topographic maps of any area of the state. You simply zoom in on the area you want, adjust the image so you see the surrounding area, preview your map on screen, and print your individually customized map. All maps can be enhanced with stunning shaded relief. Maps print on 13" x 18", large-format, waterproof paper with waterproof ink. For these highly detailed maps and the convenience of getting the maps on demand, the cost of $7.95 each is a real bargain.

"The MapMachine's unique digital imaging technology and easy-to-use touch screen interface allows you to select a map that covers an area you select. With the new MapMachine, no longer will the area you need be at the edge or corner of the map. You position the area you want where you want it on the sheet," observed James Willinger, president of Wide World of Maps. "It's printed in a couple of minutes on durable, waterproof paper, little more than a square foot in size.

Rather than settling for an "okay" map that almost meets your needs, National Geographic's MapMachine allows you to print the map exactly the way you want it, using the extensive database of the U.S. Geological Survey. Through an arrangement with USGS, the agency's maps have been digitally captured and enhanced, forming a seamless map of the entire state. Consumers are able to print any piece of this map to a scale of their choice.

According to Rick Allen, President and CEO of National Geographic Ventures, with the MapMachine, "National Geographic makes it as convenient to get the exact map and field information you need as it is to get a backpack or pair of hiking boots. Up-to-date, dependably accurate, and completely personalized: that's the future of mapping and it's coming from the most trusted name in the field-National Geographic."

"MapMachine's technology can't be beat for four wheeling and property description," raves natural resources attorney Scott Donaldson, long-time Wide World of Maps customer who uses topo maps extensively in his profession. "MapMachine has a great search engine, allowing you to find places by name, latitude-longitude or UTM coordinates. I'll never have to tape topo sheets together again. Now that the MapMachine's capabilities extend over six states, it is better than ever.

Founded in 1975 by Robert Molner and James Willinger, Wide World of Maps is the most complete map store in the Southwest, carrying every U.S.G.S. topographic map for Arizona, along with more than one million other maps, books and related items. The firm's Phoenix Mapping Service division publishes street maps for Arizona and produces custom maps for government and business. Their retail stores are located in Phoenix and Mesa.
