Piestewa Freeway Creates Larger Issue for Map Makers than Peak Name Change PHOENIX – Even as the Squaw Peak vs. Piestewa Peak controversy continues, the State Department of Transportation will consider tomorrow renaming the Squaw Peak Freeway. If the change occurs, the impact on map publishers will be huge. Wide World of Maps has more than 50 different maps, map books and map software in the store right now, from publishers like AAA, Phoenix Mapping Service, Rand McNally and National Geographic, that would require the change, explains James Willinger, president of Wide World of Maps. Because more maps nationally and internationally include highway systems than landmarks, map makers around the world will be faced with making the change. The impact of changing the name of a natural feature like Oak Creek Canyon or the Verde River probably would be smaller than this will be, if it happens. Arizonas leading commercial mapmaker, Wide World of Maps, will be making changes to the next edition of their maps, as they enter the update cycle, states James Willinger, president of Wide World of Maps. Piestewa Peak also will be named Squaw Peak on maps until the name conflict with federal officials is resolved. The reason for the five-year waiting period on these types of name changes is to reach consensus through a cooling off period, a thought process and due consideration of a name change, Willinger adds. When changes are pushed through too quickly, problems and multiple names on maps are often the result. Wide World of Maps Phoenix Mapping Service division publishes street maps for Arizona and produces custom maps for government and business. Founded in 1975 by Robert Molner and James Willinger, Wide World of Maps is the most complete map store in the Southwest, carrying every U.S.G.S. topographic map for Arizona, along with about a million other maps, books and related items. Wide World of Maps stores are located at 2626 West Indian School Road in Phoenix and 1444 West Southern Avenue in Mesa.
