Maps of an Emerging Nation: The United States of America 1775 - 1987 is part of the Celebrating the Constitution: The Bicentennial Years, 1987 - 1991 series and is officially recognized by the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution. The map is also a part of the Take Pride in America campaign.
The obverse side of the map features a reproduction of the first map of the United States of America produced by an American. Abel Buell produced A New and Correct Map of the United States of North America Layd Down From the Latest Observations and Best Authorities Agreeable to the Peace of 1783 in 1784. A side bar gives a history and breakdown of the map, plus a guide to suggested further reading.
The reverse side of the map has a series of insets depicting the growth of the nation. Each map features the states and territories of the time, plus any purchases, annexations, and cessions. Each map also features the official federal flag at the time of the map. The maps cover 1775, 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1920, and 1987. Under the map insets is a short history of the federal government's role in the mapping of the nation throughout its history.
