Sahara (ITM)
This is the only map worth taking on a trans-Sahara expedition. It covers the desert regions of West Africa from Morocco to Libya, to Niger, showing roads, tracks, water holes, and whatever urban areas exist.
The amount of information on this map is astounding. Red text can be found scattered around the map, giving guidebook-style information about those areas. A Climate of Africa inset uses color to differentiate tropical rainforests, tropical savannas, steppes, deserts, Mediterranean climate areas, amd humid sub-tropical areas for the continent. Above the place names index is a glossary of African geographical terms.
In index includes international boundaries; railroads, ferry routes, expressways, freeways, primary paved roads, secondary paved roads, paved and unpaved tertiary roads, poor quality unsurfaced roads and tracks, rough routes, restricted roads, oil and gas pipelines, point-to-point milages, and road numbers; villages, towns, cities, and national capitals; rivers, streams and creeks, intermittent streams, dry lakes, salt flats, and reservoirs; depressions and calderas, scarps and cliffs, points and capes, dunes, hamada, serir, lava, and marsh, wetland, and swamp; hypsographic and bathymetric shading; international airports, national airports, and aerodromes; train depots; ports, lighthouses, fishing ports, beaches, waterholes, and wells; border crossings; gasoline and petro stations; post offices, hospitals and medical facilities, embassies, information centers, museums, and golf; vistas, points of interest, historic ruins, archeological ruins, oasises, pottery, parks and reserves, caves, and hot springs; mines and oil wells; hotels, hostels, rest houses, and campsites and huts; and missions and churches, mosques, castles, and forts.
