The San Bernardino National Forest is situated in the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, San Jacinto, and Santa Rosa mountains about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The Forest is a rich and diverse biological resource of trees, rivers and streams, fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, and myriad of interrelated life forms and natural resources. The Rim of the World Scenic Byway is the major access route through the San Bernardino National Forest. This drive takes you through some of the most beautiful areas in Southern California. Spectacular views are everywhere along the route as well as areas of biological and historical significance. There are also stops along the byway where you can view displays on the history of the mountains and a chance of seeing local wildlife.
